This book can be funny from time to time but it's interesting to know how a bookseller works in a time when Amazon exists.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Is Shaun Bythell really like in his book ? Nethertheless an interesting book about how a bookseller works in a second hand bookshop.

Caught at the Strasbourg monthly meetup, where I was very kindly received as a guest. It was nice to meet everyone, and I thank Nodame for sharing this book. I have a small bookselling business on Amazon so this will be extra interesting to read!

This was so much fun! At first I worried that every entry having the exact same format could get boring, but that wasn't the case. I love the author's sense of humour and marked many, many passages that made me laugh out loud. Some of my favorite entries were things customers said (or asked) while in the store. For example, "...far more common today is the customer who will spend a few short minutes in the shop before leaving empty-handed, saying, 'You could spend all day in this shop.' "

--One of the few customers was a woman who spent ten minutes wandering around the shop before coming to the counter and asking, 'So what is The Book Shop? Do you sell the books or what? Do people just come in and take them?...'

---At 10 a.m. the first customer came through the door: 'I'm not really interested in books', followed by, 'Let me tell you what I think about nuclear power.' By 10.30 a.m. the will to live was but a distant memory.

As anticipated, I found Bythell's comments and feelings about Amazon both interesting and relatable. I sell a few books online, and it really is becoming more difficult to make even a small amount of money because the prices drop so quickly due to all the competition. It's so sad to see the number of small/independent bookstores that have closed because they just can't compete. It seems like The Book Shop is still going strong; let's hope that continues for a long time!

Thanks again for sharing this, Nodame!

Very amusing, I particularly enjoyed the not-so-flattering way he speaks about (many of) his customers. At first I was wondering if by now he has any customers -or friends- left, but I suspect that his approach (and Facebook-publicity) have actually brought in tons of new ones... Gotta find new ways to survive in the world dominated by Amazon!

If the shop is still there the next time I make it to Scotland, I vow to visit & browse for hours & then just leave saying "I get all my books through Bookcrossing so no need to buy anything here". Wonder if that qualifies me into his next diary :D (well, the 2nd one is already out I think so would be aiming for 3rd)

Very relaxing read. I'll remember this before considering ordering any books from amazon (haven't done that for years anyway)
