Atkinson offers the source of her title:

"A man is a god in ruins. when men are innocent, life shall be longer, and shall pass into the immortal, as gently as we awake from dreams." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

And so it is for Teddy Todd. He attends boarding school, learns the Boy Scouts' creed, heads into WWII and survives by some miracle to continue his journey as an imperfect mortal.

The story spans generations, and the story is told in bursts, jumping back and forth in time. But the focus is Teddy.

I read this, unfortunately, a while back, and don't have detailed memories. Only the knowledge that I liked it. It's a monster novel that can suck you in.

Atkinson is a remarkable writer, one I have been following since I first discovered her.
