I got this from Paperbackswap after hearing about the book on a radio interview.

It's no secret and not breaking news, the Americans are putting on too much weight. If a mother finds that her daughter is overweight, should she intervene?

Here's a mom who put her daughter on a strict diet (seriously, I feel hungry reading how little the girl was allowed to eat) and obsessively counted calorie of every single bite. While I don't dispute that extra calories translate into weight gain, I cringe when I read that she gave her daughter cool whip and diet coke because they have 0 calorie... Nonetheless, I suppose she has to pick one diet and stick to it, and each diet has rules that doesn't mean to always make sense.

The author also wrote about the criticism she received when the Vogue article came out. While I don't agree totally with Weiss' approach, I don't think she's a terrible mother. Parenting is about setting boundaries and discipline. Some children know when to stop eating, when to head to bed, or to set aside time for homework. Some need more guidance. Maybe when Bea grows up she would eat compulsively to compensate for the deprivation, maybe she'll be anorexic, but if the author did nothing, she is equally likely to grow up obese, unwell with low self esteem.

I think the vindication comes when Bea was able to attend a summer camp on her own and demonstrated that she can eat responsibly. More than anything, her mother has equipped her with a sense of empowerment, responsibility, perseverance and achievement that I think will serve her well in her future. Not just for weight management, but the power and comfort of knowing that she can achieve her goal with perseverance.
