I enjoyed Woods' "Lovecraftian apocalypse" tales in Time of Tides, and got this book from an online seller. It's about a global pandemic which, as if that weren't bad enough, segues into a zombie apocalypse...
The story riffs on the actual pandemic, using it as a jumping-off point, with the quite-bad-enough-thank-you aspects of that becoming way, way worse as the virus mutates into a zombification plague. It presents different viewpoints, from that of a handful of survivors eking out a living on top of a high-rise - as hordes of the infected gather below, well aware of the living just out of their reach - to individual cases, like the home-alone gamer whose knowledge of zombie-fighting video games makes him think he's better equipped than he might actually be.
And then things take a bleak twist when it turns out that the zombified victims are both dead - and sentient, all too aware of their current situation...
