I found this softcover in my Little Free Library in Nashua NH; thanks to whoever left it! It's from the "Black Panther" comic book series, covering a story arc in which T'Challa is out of commission and his sister Shuri steps in to become the next Black Panther! [This storyline does not fit in with the Marvel Universe movies - the Shuri in those films is a smartass (and badass) techno-genius, rather than a comic-book-heroine-busty warrior.]

Later: I enjoyed this story very much, while acknowledging it as taking place in a different reality from the movies. Here, T'Challa has married Storm (of the X-men), and is trying to negotiate a difficult situation when a combined force of powerful foes - including Prince Namor the Submariner and the Fantastic Four's nemesis Dr. Doom - kill his bodyguards and leave him badly injured and comatose. Cue Shuri's attempt to step in as the next (or, she hopes, interim) Black Panther, to battle the threat of the life-force-draining monster Morlun (from the Spiderman-verse)...

Lots of action here, from T'Challa's near-fatal fight to Shuri's trials to several encounters in the afterlife, where Storm (aka Ororo) follows T'Challa's spirit in hopes of trading her own soul so that he can return. Oh, yes, very dramatic indeed! And surprisingly effective, with Death itself becoming part of the story. There's a lot of "learning lessons about hubris", reliance on loyalty, love, and sacrifice, making use of power even if the wielders are people you don't much like or trust, and - yes - taking advantage of last-second bait-and-switch to save the day!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the Shuri comics, with some entertaining tidbits - but beware of spoilers.]

Just picked this up from the Little Free Library (my first visit to this one!) My family loves Marvel, so thank you!
